BIG news in the digital publishing world! Hearst finalized a deal with Apple, making them the first publisher to sell digital subscriptions through iTunes / the iPad. The initial magazines included are Esquire, Popular Mechanics and O, The Oprah Magazine. Launching 7/1, folks can either sign up annually ($19.99/yr) or monthly ($1.99/mo) and can expect newspaper subscriptions (SF Chronicle + Houston Chronicle) 3 months post launch.
Drawbacks, however, include Apple taking a 30% cut of all subscriptions as well as entitled ownership of the consumer data making it difficult for publishers to capitalize on the new medium.
I don’t know though – physically flipping through a magazine is one of those things I’m not ready to digitize. And you?
